The South African Predator Association wishes you all the best in the current difficult period we all experience.
In your previous programme Dr Culdwel, a veterinarian in Gauteng presented a thorough explanation of the nature of the virus and ability of cross contamination between human and animal. He confirmed that the possibility of infection is extremely low and relatively impossible.
SAPA is aware of false media stating the opposite. These organizations also indicated venison as a carrier of the corona virus. This is false. SAPA is concerned about the fact that these organizations use the pandemic to spread fake news, creating unnecessary and additional tension in these trying times.
SAPA urges listeners not to believe the false news. SAPA also pleads with the public to support the South African game industry, and to prevent the further spread of these posts and statements to others.
It is a well known fact that the lion population in the Kruger Park is infected with feline tuberculosis. The authorities responsible for animal health is dealing with it on several platforms. As for lions in captive facilities, it is a different scenario. A lion farmer will never keep a TB infected animal, it is far too dangerous and irresponsible. Veterinarians and owners responsible for the animals in captivity will immediately act and ensure due process in a case of infection. SAPA is not aware of any occurrence in any captive facility outside Kruger Park, and none was reported.
All Managers of high density breeding operations of any animal is very conscious of the importance of bio-security measures and standards of health. The same goes for a predator facility. During this corona lock-down period, animals are fed as usual. Transport permits are issued for procurement of meat and movement of labour.
